4 Ideas to Get the Most Out of a Business Convention

If you have an upcoming convention that your company wants you to attend, then you need to make the most out of the time you are there. The conference is an opportunity for you to learn more about the newest trends and information in your field, but it is also a chance for you to extend your professional network. With a little bit of forethought and planning, you can make this conference one of the most beneficial of your career.

Pack Only the Essentials

If you are traveling to a very large convention, then you may have to fight airport traffic and busy hotels. It will make your trip easier if you only pack the absolute necessities to take with you. As you fill your suitcase, keep in mind that you will be bringing home some materials from the conference and that you will need some space in which to store them.

Look at the Schedule

In most cases, you will receive a convention schedule prior to the trip, which will give you plenty of time to look it over and decide where you want to go. As you go through the brochure, highlight the sessions that will be extremely beneficial. You can also take note of the ones that you would like to attend if your first choices are filled or unavailable. If you are worried about getting to the convention on time each day, then hire a limo for you and your coworkers so that you don’t have to worry about catching a cab in busy traffic. The limo driver will also be familiar with the area and can drive you to the best restaurants in town.

Write Down the Key Point

As you go to each session, you will be bombarded with information, which can make it hard for you to remember the things that you have learned. To help your memory, try to condense each session into one key point. It may be something that you learned, a piece of advice or a specific tip that you can use as you work.

Organize Business Cards

As you are networking at the convention, you will receive numerous business cards. While you may think that you will remember who gave you each card, you will find that their identity escapes you by the time you get back home. To help minimize confusion, sort the business cards as you receive them. Keep the important contacts in one place so that you can access them easily when you need them. You can also have another pocket for those whose information you want to keep but will not need in the near future. Throw away the rest of the cards so that you don’t have to carry home more than is necessary.

While you may gain important information at a convention, it is easy to get so overwhelmed that you forget most of what you have learned. These tips will help you make the most of your conference so that you can be a better employee once you return to work.
