5 Best Beaches to Visit Near Houston
Now is the perfect time to start planning out all your mini summer vacations, and living in Houston, you don’t need to travel far for the perfect trip. Houston is a thriving, bustling city with plenty of summer attractions, restaurants, and beaches—the perfect spot for your next staycation. Instead of travelling across the country on a big, expensive trip, try out these beaches that are a little closer to home:
Located less than 30 minutes away from Houston, in La Porte, Texas, Sylvan Beach is perfect for the whole family. Not only are you treated to gorgeous views and a beautiful sandy beach, Sylvan Beach also has plenty of restrooms, a playground for the kids, showers, picnic areas, and on-site parking. Beachgoers can even go fishing off Sylvan’s long pier for about $4.
If you’re looking for a quiet getaway, Surfside Beach is a great spot to relax and unwind. Located about one hour outside of Houston, the beach takes up around 2.5 miles of coastline in a tiny village of just 500 residents. With clear waters and low waves, Surfside Beach is also the perfect place for beginner surfers to practice. Not only can you have small bonfires on the beach, there are also small areas to camp.
Stewart Beach is a one-stop-shop for families. With a slew of amenities, the beach offers umbrellas to rent, plenty of restrooms, showers, chair rentals, concessions, and more. Most importantly, unlike other beaches surrounding Houston, Stewart Beach has lifeguards on duty, so busy parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing their children are always in good hands. While parking is $10-$15, you can find free spots further away from the beach.
Looking for an adventure? Then Bolivar Peninsula is the perfect beach for you. The beach itself is about a two-hour drive from Houston and takes a bit of a hike to get to. Nestled along Highway 87 and the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, this beach is extremely quiet and free of vacationers for the most part. Even on a busy day, you may only find a handful of beachgoers in the sand. What you won’t find here are restrooms, lifeguards, or other amenities.
El Jardin Beach
A small, warm beach located in Seabrook, Texas, El Jardin Beach is great for families and couples alike. Because the beach faces the bay, its waves are mild, making it perfect for small children and their parents. Not only is the sand soft and free of debris, there’s also a green area for picnics. El Jardin Beach is quite small, and parking limited, so it’s important to get there early if you want a decent parking spot.
